Ancestral Wisdom and Healing: Drumming Back to the Roots

Today, I want to share a story of physical exhaustion and spiritual rejuvenation. It's a tale of rediscovering the power of ancestral wisdom and ancestral healing through the rhythms of drumming and the celebration of our heritage.

After a nearly 3-year hiatus, I found myself in a state of utter physical exhaustion. My arches ached, my calves were screaming for a massage, and my biceps and shoulders complained like I had done an hour's worth of push-ups. My gas tank was almost on empty, but I wouldn't change a thing.

You see, I've spent the last month rekindling the flame that fuels my spirit and feeds my soul: drumming in community. Returning to drum class, performing, attending shows, and participating in Leimert Park's annual Day of the Ancestor: Festival of Masks has been nothing short of transformative.

The Day of the Ancestor began with a libation and prayer led by a community elder, setting the tone for a day filled with intergenerational magic. A parade of musicians, dancers, puppets, and larger-than-life masks took to the streets, celebrating our rich heritage. The festivities continued with performances from local drum, dance, and music groups, each beat resonating with the essence of our ancestors.

For me, drumming is more than a hobby; it's my meditation, a place where stress melts away, questions find answers, and messages from the past come alive. It's an undeniable portal to ancestral connection.

Our ancestors hold the keys to guidance, healing, and a profound sense of belonging. I want to share this gift with you.
